The research master's degree in Socio-environmental Studies with a mention in climate change, sustainability and development responds to a priority, defined in the Constitution, the PNBV 2013-2017 and, the international commitments of Ecuador, and also responds to a social need defined by the need to preserve the improvements in the quality of life achieved and projected, within the framework of sustainability. The program is aimed especially at professionals with a vocation for research, who want to develop innovative concepts from the social sciences, with a critical perspective, and including knowledge of environmental sciences. The program is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach, which combines subjects related to the social and natural sciences, and emphasizes an applied vision towards the critical discussion and formulation of mitigation and adaptation policies. It also studies other global ecological problems strongly linked to climate change, such as food sovereignty and the loss of biodiversity.

Graduate profile

The graduate must have a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and critical knowledge on climate change, its causes, effects, links to problems of biodiversity and food sovereignty and possible mitigation and adaptation policies, framed in a strategy of sustainability and development. Its interdisciplinary vision should cover relevant fields in social and environmental (natural) sciences.
Its interdisciplinary vision must include a management of the concepts of ecological economy and political ecology, applied to climate change, international adaptation and mitigation negotiations, and international north-south relations. Your conceptual knowledge of climate change should include its impacts and mutual relationships with agriculture, health, energy sources, water resources, food sovereignty, and biodiversity. It will combine a conceptual knowledge with a capacity for managing and evaluating climate change policies with an emphasis on Ecuador and the Andean countries.
They will have an adequate handling of research methods and techniques applicable to their field of knowledge, including the use of statistics and quantitative techniques.
The graduate must be able to carry out and advise interdisciplinary studies on these issues, design and evaluate mitigation and adaptation policies and projects at the national and international level. The graduate must be able to formulate, carry out and evaluate analytical and explanatory research, of an interdisciplinary nature, applied to climate change, sustainability and development.
The graduate of the Master's program will have an ethical management of information relevant to the subject for advice and consulting projects.

  2. It relates the principles and foundations of deontology with professional life and its impact on society. 
  3. It interprets in a critical and reflective way relevant aspects of the national and Latin American reality in its relationship with the world.
  4. It critically understands the interaction of human beings with the environment.
  5. Identify and analyze the current situation of the group or organization.

Entry requirements

Students must have a third-level university degree registered with SENESCYT, preferably in social sciences (sociology, political science, history, anthropology, international relations, history), law, economics, engineering (environmental, geographic, agronomy, chemistry, statistics ); natural sciences (ecology, biology), tourism.

A minimum work experience of 2 years in areas related to climate change and environmental management, an experience in applied research, and fluent reading of the English language. Previous research work, teaching experience, and publications will be evaluated.

Certificate of proficiency in English B1.
